Over the past several months, I have walked through our community and been disheartened by what I have seen. Children on their way to camp, surrounded by addiction, families fighting to rebuild after trauma, parents heartbroken as opportunities slip away for their kids.
I recently visited the Dayspring Domestic Violence Center, a safe haven in Baltimore for women and families escaping trauma, where mothers and families were rebuilding after years of abuse. The director shared a painful truth: they are in desperate need of more outreach and support to continue serving those in recovery. These stories are not just statistics or case files, they are people fighting for their lives, for stability, for hope.
I have read the desperate posts from parents who are heartbroken because many summer camps remain out of reach for their children, and I’ve heard the urgent need for more support. Children bursting with excitement to attend camp, only to be disappointed when funding falls through. And just like that, their chance to attend camp slips away. But it’s more than missing the opportunity to swim or take field trips. They missed out on being in a safe space to learn and simply be kids in a fun, enriching environment, where they could be free from the burdens that too often force them to carry far beyond their years.
This is where The We Build Foundation steps in. We’re doing the work, quietly and faithfully, day by day. Many of these children’s faces can’t be shared publicly, and that’s okay. We honor their privacy. We honor their stories. We honor their right to a safe space where they can simply be children.
