The Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University is taking a bold step to promote love as a central pillar of human flourishing. Building on years of research and global initiatives, the program has announced its Love of Neighbor Initiative, aimed at fostering love across multiple spheres of society.
Love At The Heart of Human Flourishing
Grounded in research showing that being loved and loving others is essential for our well-being, the initiative seeks to integrate love into everyday life, policy, and community structures. Studies from the Human Flourishing Program highlight that love contributes to mental health, resilience, forgiveness, and social cohesion.
“All of our reasons for action arise from love, and all of our various emotions and passions are ultimately grounded in love,” notes the program’s research on love and human flourishing.
A Multi-Faced Approach to Promoting Love
The Love of Neighbor Initiative will focus on:
- Promoting love in relationships across families, schools, friendships, workplaces, and religious communities.
- Tracking love in society through nationally representative assessments of love of neighbor and even love of enemy, providing insight into trends and changes over time.
- Influencing public policy to recognise love as a social determinant of health, shaping institutions and international bodies from the World Health Organization to the American Psychiatric Association.
- Supporting campaigns that encourage a universal love of neighbor, helping to bridge divisions and foster empathy.
Connecting Research with Action
The initiative builds on the Human Flourishing Program’s previous impact-focused projects, including:
- The Flourishing Network, connecting over 500 professionals worldwide to share insights on human flourishing.
- The Flourishing Schools Project, implementing interventions such as kindness and friendship programs in schools globally.
- The Global Forgiveness Movement, promoting forgiveness to restore love and improve mental health.
By combining empirical research with real-world applications, the program aims to create measurable improvements in well-being and societal harmony.
A Vision for a Civilization of Love
The Love of Neighbor Initiative encourages society to see love as a practical and transformative force. From classrooms to boardrooms, hospitals to governments, love can be a guiding principle for policies, practices, and daily interactions.
“For a fuller human flourishing, we need to be striving towards love and towards what some have called a ‘civilization of love.’”
The initiative offers opportunities for individuals, institutions, and communities to participate, support, and measure love’s impact, reinforcing the idea that small actions of care can ripple out to create broader societal change. New research adds another dimension to human flourishing — dancing has been identified as the single most effective form of exercise for mental health, outperforming not just other workouts but medication too.
