Taking Action to Support families
Since many of us were raised in low-income families, we can attest to the real significance of these figures. Millions of American families battle each year to provide for their most basic necessities. Behind the numbers are parents who forgo meals for their children, caregivers who work multiple jobs and struggle to pay their bills, and children who worry too much for their age.
Tens of millions of people live below the poverty line, according to data. Yet, this number does not account for the restless nights, the difficult decisions about food and rent, or the perseverance required to keep going. Every family included in these studies is a family that longs for safety, respect, and the opportunity to prosper.
Approximately 3.3 million families were below the poverty level in 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, even though at least one family member worked for at least half of the year. Based on a poverty criterion of $30,900 for a family of four, the Kids Count Data Center estimates that 11.4 million children, or 16% of all children in the United States, live in poverty.
At our foundation, we support families and underprivileged kids by providing care, hope, and support when they need it most. We have organized enriching activities for children at Catholic Charities, held Employment Readiness Workshops for individuals at our Daily Bread Employment Center in Baltimore, and donated a significant amount of professional clothing, including ties, shoes, jewelry, and resume paper, to men and women preparing to enter the workforce. To better understand the needs of families impacted by domestic violence and children living in substandard conditions, we have spoken with pastors, community leaders, and shelter directors.
Families and individuals gain self-confidence, acquire necessary skills, and move closer to stability and a better future as a result of these initiatives. We are reaching a wider audience, bringing hope, establishing long-lasting possibilities, and assisting more youngsters in feeling noticed, supported, and empowered to grow by establishing solid community connections and applying for government grants.
