Rising Sons Book Club
The Rising Sons Book Club was formed for boys to amplify and explore authors of color and their works of literature. Statistics show that boys are not scoring well in literacy, and the Rising Sons Book Club aims to combat that narrative. The book club meets virtually and is open to boys within the reading level of 3rd grade to 9th grade, an age when many black boys statistically stop reading. The children will expand their literary prowess by reading novels, biographies, memoirs, and essays by authors of color from around the world. In the past, they read classics such as The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba, Black Panther: The Battle for Wakanda, Kareem Abdul Jabar’s Growing Up Off the Court, and New Kid by Jerry Craft.
